How to make the most of your trip to Clearwell Castle

Located in the village of Clearwell, in the heart of the Forest of Dean, Clearwell Castle is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area. Once a grand family home, the castle now has a new lease of life as a spectacular wedding venue offering accommodation and catering services.

Not open to the public, getting married at Clearwell Castle is the perfect way for you and your guests to discover the secrets within its walls.

History of the castle

Built by Thomas Wyndham in 1727, Clearwell Castle replaced an older property that occupied the same site. The property remained in the Wyndham family until it was sold in 1893. The castle was eventually purchased by Colonel Charles Vereker.

During his time as owner, Clearwell was struck by disaster when fire broke out, gutting the building, and destroying priceless artworks and unique pieces of furniture.

Following the death of Vereker in 1947, the castle fell into disrepair. In 1953, the building was saved from demolition by Frank Yates, the son of a former gardener. Following a painstaking renovation, the castle was opened to the public and a recording studio was built in the ironically named Quiet Room. Bands to have recorded at Clearwell include Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen and Whitesnake. In 1998, Clearwell was purchased by the owners of Country House Weddings who have been hosting successful events at the castle ever since.

Best time for Weddings

Thanks to its stunning surroundings and beautiful interior, Clearwell Castle makes a great venue for weddings throughout the year. Get married in the winter months to enjoy a cosy weekend of walking, eating and drinking, stop by in the spring to see the local countryside burst into life or book a summer celebration to see the local landscape at its very best. In the autumn months, the surrounding trees put on a spectacular display of colour, making this another fantastic time to hold your big day.
