There are few better places to view the stunning Gloucestershire countryside, and the local wildlife, than Yat Rock. As @ForestryEngland says, ”Goshawks can be viewed in detail, Sparrowhawks are frequent and breed in the trees in the valley as do Buzzards which can be seen from above whilst soaring.”
3. Puzzlewood
Puzzlewood is an ancient, magical woodland located in the heart of the Forest of Dean. The unique landscape has been the setting for a number of Hollywood films.
Spend a morning hunting down famous film locations or an afternoon exploring the twisted trees and moss-covered glens of this enigmatic forest.
4. Hopewell Colliery
Mining has long played an important part in local life in the Forest of Dean. Learn more about mining, and get a close-up view of the narrow caves and tunnels by visiting the excellent Hopewell Colliery, a working mine and museum just a few miles from Clearwell.
5. Perrygrove Railway
If there are three things all kids love, they’re tree houses, trains and treasure. Perrygrove Railway combines all three, with a working steam train, a treetop adventure trail, and an exciting treasure hunt for kids to enjoy.
6. Cannop Cycle Centre
If you’re looking for ways to get your kids a little more active, a trip to the Cannop Cycle Centre is a must.
Situated in the Forest of Dean, it’s home to a number of well-marked trails as well as a café, shop and repair centre.
7. Great Western Railway Museum, Coleford
The Great Western Railway Museum in Coleford is a great destination for kids who love trains. During your visit, you can find out more about the history of steam trains in the region and have a ride on the museum’s very own miniature railway.
8. GoApe
Located in the Forest of Dean, a trip to GoApe will give your kids the chance to explore the woodland canopy, work off their excess energy, and have some fun in the fresh air. Suitable for kids and adults alike, it’s a great destination for a family day out.
9. Forest of Dean
While there are lots of activities available in the area, one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the countryside is to simply take a family walk through the Forest of Dean. Moreover, there are signposted walks available across the area, making it easy to get out and explore.
10. River Wye
The River Wye is another of the region’s highlights. Take your family canoeing or kayaking down the waterway or spend a day walking along its picturesque banks.
