Award-winning Wines from the Forest of Dean

Here at The Wyndham Country Inn and Hotel, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting wines for our guests.

That’s because, based in the Forest of Dean we are surrounded by many award-winning wineries – none more so than the famous Three Choirs Vineyard in Newent and Parva Farm at Chepstow. We’ve previously written about both wineries so in this article we’re going to focus on their award-winning wines, as well as those by Hertfordshire vineyard Wythall Estate.

But first, the abundance of fine award-winning local wines means it is no mean task for the team here to whittle down their list of favourites. The reason is to bring you what we believe to be the best of what our little corner of England offers. And, we are certain that once you have a glass or two yourself, you’ll agree our meticulous research certainly paid off. In the meantime, Guardian journalist Tony Naylor describes “an aperitif of white wine from Parva Farm as “spritzy and enjoyable.”

Three Choirs, Classic Cuvée

One of our all-time favourites, the Three Choirs, Classic Cuvée is a celebrated dry wine. It has a hint of orchard fruit combined with the fresh acidity of the grapes. Delicate and clean, it works well for toasting a special occasion. Currently retails at £16.99.

Three Choirs, Pinot Noir Rosé

Staying with the Three Choirs, the vineyards equally bubbly Pinot Noir Rosé, Sparkling 2017 is another delicious award-winner. This 100% Pinot Noir grape wine is a classic complexity with a touch of strawberry and cream. A lovely orange-pink shade that retails at around £26.99.

Wythall Estate Vineyard, Estate Red

This lovely soft garnet coloured wine is a multi-award-winning wine from the team at the Wythall Estate Vineyard in nearby Ross on Wye. A fine-grained tannin from a dark-skinned hybrid grape known as Rondo, it is a medium to lightweight wine. It offers a scent of plums and cinnamon with tastes of cherry, plum and a hint of violets. It ends with a liquorice finish. Retails at around £20.

Wythall Estate Vineyard, May Hill 2017

This medium-sweet wine has a grapefruit scent and a taste of citrus fruits with honeyed notes on the palate. It is well-balanced, with the sweetness and acidity leaving a clean finish. Retails for around £11.50

Parva Farm Dathliad Sparkling

Popping over to Parva Farm and the team here also have a spectacular award-winning celebratory wine in their Dathliad Sparkling. First-place trophy winner in the English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2016, this medium-to-bold wine has grapefruit, lime and citrus notes with an acidic taste and strong fizziness. Retails at around £25.

Parva Farm Tintern Parva Bacchus

This 2019 Still White wine, produced from 100 per cent Bacchus grapes is a Wine GB 2020 awards winner. This is an aromatic wine, with the gentle scent of elderflower. Taste-wise it’s fruity with a slight herbaceous tone. It finishes off with a nice rounded mid-palate. Retailing at around £16.
